Who would’ve guessed. We are taking a look at the New Wargames Atlantic 10mm scale sets, but now the Samurai, as we promised. The previous box, the Ashigaru set, came with 228 models. This box contains a bit less with just over 224 (!) models. Still an impressive amount, and it will keep you busy for a while.

Now we know there are 104 fewer models in this box. What makes this box still attractive to take next to your Ashigaru? Well… first off, this samurai box is full of elite units. In history at least. The nice thing about wargames, is that you can make whatever you want from them of course. Let’s just assume we are “building” elite units.

What’s in the Wargames Atlantic Samurai box?

Let’s take a look at the sprue of the box. As with the other box, this box contains 4 of the same sprues of the elite units of your samurai army. We find blocks of 2, 3 and 5 samurai, but also separate ones. We find victims to fill up the gaps and yes, these also could be used perfectly as necromancers that fly around the battlefield. Not your average samurai so to speak.

The assortment of models differs from long arms to bows and the occasional sword. Next to the foot folk, we also find horses on the sprue. 8 to be precise, making a whopping 32 horses in the kit total. On the sides we find big and small banners to stick to little fighters on the back. They fit the horse riding samurai as well as the foot folk.

No need to build the Wargames Atlantic Samurai kit

You heard that right. Because they are so small, they only need to be cut of the sprue. After that, straight onto a base. At this scale, it’s perfectly fine if you don’t paint the parts you don’t see anymore when eventually based. No one’s going to stop you, but know that I already needed to use reading glasses to take a look at the sprue.

Just be sure to use a sharp cutter or hobby knife, as the fiddly parts connected to the feeder parts of the sprue are quite thin. Using a sharp hobby knife and/ or a clipper is a must with this kit. You don’t want to break of parts of the weapons, that stick out like a sore thumb if you break off a bit!

Painting the Samurai

Just as with the Ashigaru, I would highly advise keeping the models on the sprue. When you already have bases prepared, glue them on and paint them. I personally love the 10 mm scale line of wargames (remember my love for Argatoria?), but also acknowledge they are tiny to handle. They can’t get lost on the sprue and the base is big enough to spot when looking for certain models.

Another thing I found while painting models of these sizes, is the fact that speedpaint like paints work insanely good for this scale. You still need to be careful where you put the paint, but when undercoated white (I didn’t dare to zenithal), there is no way to go wrong. There are also a lot of them, so painting with a bit of speed would be perfect here.

The Future of the Wargames Atlantic Grand Scale line

As far as we could find, there will be command boxes planned for at least the samurai. We have also spotted pictures of orcs in the weekly newsletters that Wargames Atlantic sends out to their subscribers. This tells me that this line of models is just starting and there will be loads more.

Because the 10 mm scale is taking an interest from players all over, it’s a wise decision to start with the line. These miniatures are quite good, but it’s hard to put a lot of detail in 10mm. as your space is quite limited to work with. The name says it all, these models are for grand battles, not individual adventures in worlds far away and times long gone. These are for hard fighting and displaying the fight. These models work perfect for it and I can’t wait to see what the future for this line brings us. If you like these miniatures, be sure to check out their site or our shop here.

Who can resist 524 models for an unbeatable price! You can spend one evening with the wife at a fancy restaurant, or paint this amount for probably less than where the wife wanted to eat! Needless to say, we hope the future is Grand with this product line. Bring it on!
