So, as most of the people know by now, we have a webshop. Do we keep it all online? NO! Surely not, since we visit the conventions more than we can handle. In the act of doing so, we talk to a lot of other producers and companies. This time we had a good conversation with our friend from Deepcut studios, and they gave us something new to talk about here, so let’s start with talking about the Deepcut Studio Paintmarkers

Deepcut Studio Paintmarkers

And Eldfall Chronicles just came in

What better time to review a set of markers by using another set of miniatures. They just came in and need a paint to start playing! In our previous review here, you can read all about the unboxing of this quite surprising product. Know we did paint and review these markers with these models, supplied to us by Freecompany.

Reinventing the painting wheel with Deepcut Studio paintmarkers

At first, I was a bit skeptical about the product when I saw them first. This also comes from the fact I can’t work with the speedpaint/ contrast paint lines of paint. No matter from who or how good they are to others. When you need a full brush load of paint, you have no control of the loaded paint anymore. It becomes hard to put out some form of quality. No matter the brand or paint color, I just can’t work with it.

So me being skeptical about the pens was grounded for me. I talked with the people at Deepcut and after telling them about my skepticism, they gave me not one pen, but the full loadout of pens. This tells me they are pretty convinced about the quality of them and how they work.

I have seen this concept before…

…and after a look-up on the internet, I have seen them appearing in Gunpla model building. Graffiti was the trendsetter of the sort, like pens on a larger scale. These are felt tips that you have to press into the paint, They then suck up the paint and “leak” towards the tip in order to get paint to where you want it.

Now I realize it would only be a matter of time before one tried them on models, and lo and behold, it happened. Gladly, it happened with two friends of the company, otherwise I would not be able to talk about them here. Good people.

These pens were manufactured by Deepcut Studio and filled with Army Painter Speedpaint 2.0. Both Companies have been in business for a long time, and they know what they are doing, so all should be well then, right?

Let’s start painting with these Deepcut Studios Paintmarkers

Enough talking and more painting! This is what you came here for, so let’s deliver. They, foremost, paint like speedpaint 2.0. The paint is exactly the same as the ones in the dropper bottles, and there is not much more to talk about here than what we already did about it.

What does improve on the paint, is the fact you ALWAYS have a perfect tip on your brush. Since this is a felt tip, you can’t misform this tip unless you are breaking the pen. This is a good thing. You have the very end of the tip, the sides and of course, if you press a bit on the tip, more paint. This makes painting with a speedpaint like consistency finally doable for me as a novice painter, and I love it!

On the models I have painted so far, I found out that you can be as neat as with normal paint and more control with Deepcut Studio Painmarkers, but way faster than with the classical paint. Normally with a paint session, I churn out about 1 to 2 models per evening, and now I did 4 of them and the monster air elemental that was also in the set.

So yes, it paints faster once you get the hang of it and I think this could improve my routine for painting demo sets. On convention days, we can’t just assume people wash their hands, and demo models are to be touched. This means the models damage much faster than normal usage. Covered with a nice thick coat of varnish, these models should stand the Doritohands* the people gladly offer the models on these days.

*Doritohands: Hands unwashed after eating all sorts of fat foods or foods that stain the fingers/ hands with spices.

Who are these Deepcut Studio Paintmarkers for?

Deepcut Studio Paintmarkers

Since the rise of the “runny pigment paints” like Contrast and Speedpaint products, there are a lot of people who adapted the faster paint style. Methods like slapchop are more common in painting than spending more and more time with one model. Logical, since there are more and more models available within shorter lines to them. This also means, that if you want to keep up with the new toys, you need to paint fast.

If you think that slap chopping was fast, think again! These Deepcut Studio paintmarkers improve the speed 4-fold! I don’t have to plan my demo sets ahead of time AND being able to finish them ahead of time still!

Does that mean that they are for everyone? No, as much as I like them, these don’t make me go and use these kinds of paints now. If you are one that needs army’s painted within a week, and you don’t have too much cape’s, robes or other stuff hanging around the models, you are the person I am talking about here. These pens are perfect for you!

Are you a dm and need a lot of models quick to harass your players as much as possible? These are your paints, but I assume also that you are using some of them already! In other words, these paint pens target the audience that has already been targeted by the paint suppliers that fill these paints.

These Deepcut Studio paintmarkers are the +1 invite that make the date night a better one. These Deepcut paint pens are there to speed up your work and have them do all the work for you, just like you use pencils and other normal felt markers.

Con’s
– you can’t reach tight spaces, since the Deepcut Studio paintmarkers are quite thick
– you can reach high quality paintwork, but need to practice a lot with them
– reaching moderate quality paint jobs is the max you can reach. This is not because of the pens, but more the cause of the paint.

Conclusion on the Deepcut Studio Paintmarkers

I can guarantee there is a large audience that is waiting on a product like this. I also truly think that they reinvented the wheel when it comes to speed painting. These are way faster and batch painting just became a lot easier. When you are a dm and need to prepare a good amount of models, you have the perfect product in hand with these Deepcut Studio paintmarkers. As a commission painter with a 3 color level model request from a customer, these are your goto paint pens!

There is also use for them if you are a higher standard model painter for sure! If you need batch paints where the focus is not on skin, you can use these pens to paint in skin quick, so you can focus on the things you need attention towards.

These Deepcut Studio paintmarkers will 100% have an audience and are not just a simple gimmick to work with once and discard. I for one, will use them until they are empty and have opened up my eyes towards speedpaints (in general the Army Painter ones, since I discarded others for the time being).

There is a high probability I will add them to the store, since they are new and actually add something to our hobby. There are enough awesome products, even on KS, that are used once or discarded even before they were used. These might not look like they are golden, but usage surely proves they are… for certain people.
